Inter can celebrate their progress to the Champions League Round of 16, which was mathematically sealed after Real Madrid beat Sheriff.

The Nerazzurri did their part with a 2-0 home victory over Shakhtar Donetsk in the earlier kick-off.

They still had to wait for a favour from Carlo Ancelotti, whose Real Madrid only needed to avoid defeat in Moldova to secure Inter’s spot.

That was achieved without problems, as Real Madrid ran out 3-0 winners away to Sheriff Tiraspol.

Inter are in the Champions League Round of 16 for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

Just a year before that, they had won the Treble of Champions League, Serie A title and Coppa Italia under Jose Mourinho.

  1. Simone Inzaghi truly has to be in contention for best Serie A coach.

He was doing miracles at Lazio and got the MOST trophies after Juventus in the last 15 years ! That was with a cheap Lotito.

He got to inter only to find out that 2 of the most influential/vital players will leave (Lukaku and Hakimi) and he seems to be doing a better job than Conte.

Put some respect on his name!

  2. I agree that Inzaghi is doing a good job so far. He lost 3 key players, not just Lukaku and Hakimi but Eriksen as well. He may have been even more important to his playing style than the former two.
With that said, we gotta give credit where it’s due – Conte left him a team drilled to perfection and with a champion’s mentality to boost. Let’s just wait till the end of the season before we start giving away awards.

  3. Just more evidence that you need to attack in Europe. Conte had the superior squad but failed twice because of his conservative approach. Inzaghi achieved this with an inferior Lazio and Inter squad because at least he’s not afraid to attack. If only more Serie A teams take this approach.

  4. @Vieri totally agreed! Since the team is superior on paper, don`t be afraid to attack from the very beginning. Conte ran out of time and Spalletti continues to demonstrate that he is a coward. Too bad for Hakimi, he is truly impossible to replace.

  5. No need to blow up about decade of Inter missed 16 round…there is a team who done worst…the last they won Champion league was in 1996…about 25 years ago…

  6. For this achievement you get a cookie 🍪

Another team made it to the 2nd Round 8 years straight. Also, have their own stadium.

See the picture on this story and the shirt sponsor. Just throwing it out there but maybe, just maybe,
Inter can use these fan tokens to build their own stadium.

  7. Inter have beaten the mighty Sheriff to second place!!! Who saw that coming? Must go down as one of the biggest upsets in the storied history of Moldovan football.
Seriously, my Nan would have qualified from that group.

  8. @Yepe: If only winning the Champions League was as easy as passing the group stag cuz Juve would win it every year ! Besides, who sets the italian record as the only italian team to fail to pass the Champions League group stage 3 years in a row just to do something so easy as pass the Croup stage? i know…. INTER !
