The Mayor of Sesto San Giovanni explains why Inter and Milan should move their new stadium to this suburb. ‘Many Premier League clubs are not based in the centre of London.’

The Serie A clubs announced today they are prepared to walk away from the city of Milan in order to construct their new arena if the project cannot be guaranteed the go-ahead in a short space of time.

It is now more likely we will see them choose Sesto San Giovanni, a suburb of the city of Milan, as their Mayor is enthusiastic about the idea.

“Sesto has all the services that Milan can offer, we just need people to remove that ideological barrier that makes them think everything ends at the city limits,” Mayor Roberto Di Stefano told MiaNews.

“We have some of the largest open areas in Europe, three metro stations already open and another two in construction. You can reach the Duomo or Linate airport in 15 minutes.”

The Mayor of Sesto San Giovanni also insists this would not be a revolutionary move for football, as it is already common in the Premier League.

“Several London clubs are based in various neighbourhoods around London rather than in the city. I think it’s possible here too, if we take an international view and one of metropolitan co-ordination.”

The red tape issue in Italy when it comes to new stadiums has been a problem for decades, as many have not been revamped since the 1990 World Cup.

The biggest problem Roma ran into was transport links, but Sesto San Giovanni already has those Metro stations in place.
