Even if Inter win the Scudetto in a stadium full of a majority of Milan supporters on Monday, police are confident there will not be any crowd trouble due to a pact.
The Derby della Madonnina kicks off at San Siro on Monday at 19.45 UK time (18.45 GMT).
A victory would mathematically guarantee the Serie A title goes to the Nerazzurri.
However, as it is officially a Milan ‘home’ game, the Rossoneri will be in the majority filling the stands.
In theory, this is a powder keg that could explode, with the two sets of ultras clashing in the stadium or in the streets if there are Scudetto celebrations.
However, La Gazzetta dello Sport points out police are confident there will be no issues because, unlike most derbies, there has been peace in Milan since 1981.
Inter and Milan made peace
This is thanks to a non-aggression pact that the chiefs of the two ultras sealed following a tragedy, the death of 21-year-old Inter supporter Vittore Palmieri close to San Siro.
Neither side wanted to risk a repeat of this bloodshed, so they signed a ‘pact of non-belligerence’ that continues to hold to this day.
They can still mock each other – and are encouraged to do so – but there is no violence.
“The pact is a guarantee for everyone, otherwise the streets of Milan would become a battleground,” Inter ultras leader Marco Ferdico told the Corriere della Sera newspaper.
