Inter secured a dramatic late win over Tottenham Hotspur last night, as they returned to the Champions League for the first time since 2011-12.

Christian Eriksen’s deflected goal had opened the scoring for the visitors, but a stunning Mauro Icardi volley and a late header from Matias Vecino sent San Siro into raptures.

“San Siro, passionate as ever and once again packed, was afraid,” writes Gazzetta dello Sport.

“But the scream of the Nerazzurri fans at the end of the game was a scream of war.”

The newspaper also noted that both Icardi and Vecino scored in the match which took Inter into the Champions League, declaring “the night Inter had been waiting for six and a half years ends in jubilation”.

Corriere dello Sport predicted the win could have a transformative effect: “After 2380 days of absence, Inter re-embraced the Champions League with an adrenaline-filled comeback that has the potential to revolutionise a whole season”.

Meanwhile, today’s Corriere della Sera focuses on the Beneamata captain’s goalscoring debut in the competition.

“He waited six years to make his debut in the Champions League, and Mauro Icardi immediately made up for lost time,” writes Franco Fiocchini.

“Inter, in the second half, had risked being overwhelmed by Tottenham following Eriksen’s goal. But the great strike from their captain galvanised Spalletti’s entire team so that in the second of four minutes of injury time they turned the result on its head with a header from Vecino.

“Inter and their Coach needed saving and once again Maurito Icardi provided, with a great volley from outside the area on Asamoah’s cross. The technique of a great champion, to reiterate that Inter can’t do without him”.

La Stampa’s report begins by talking about “the night Inter fans had dreamed of for six years, the story of the Nerazzurri’s return to the Champions League is to be handed down to children and grandchildren”.

The match report notes that Tottenham were on top for most of the second half, before going on to describe the incredible comeback.

“But you know, Inter are crazy by their nature. And in the last five minutes they managed a comeback at the limits of science fiction.

“Icardi pulled the rabbit out of the hat and scored a crazy volley from outside the area on Asamoah’s cross. Then, in the middle of extra-time, Vecino completes the incredible one-two punch, nodding in from two yards from De Vrij’s header. San Siro explodes: ‘we are back’. Inter, at least in the Champions League, are back”.
