Nothing but praise from the Italian newspapers for Mateo Retegui, who played a key role in Genoa’s thrilling 4-1 win over Roma.

Alberto Gilardino’s side got off to a strong start thanks to an Albert Gudmundsson opener in the fifth minute, before Bryan Cristante scored an equaliser later in the first half. The Rossoblu failed to lose faith, however, and flew to a 4-1 win after goals from Retegui, Morten Thorsby and Junior Messias.

Retegui scored his fifth goal of the season for Genoa in their win over Roma, quickly proving himself a top striker in Serie A just two months after his €12m move from Boca Juniors. His strong start has proven exciting for Azzurri fans ahead of the October international break.

La Gazzetta dello Sport were highly impressed with Retegui’s work against Roma, highlighting his decisive role in the 4-1 win, writing: “Inspired. His left-footed control and right-footed shot shake the Ferraris.”

Corriere dello Sport were slightly more critical, but still spoke highly of his performance, commenting: “He ran far and wide, gave himself to the team and then took to the stage by finishing a beautiful action, beating Rui Patricio with a violent shot that made the Marassi go crazy.”

Tuttosport underlined Retegui’s importance to Genoa, calling him a talismanic figure of the squad, writing: “A goal from a real striker. He felt the goal and fought like a lion. He is more and more the dragging force of this Genoa.”
