Lorenzo Insigne’s screamer against Belgium was voted as the second-best goal of the season in European competitions, behind Porto’s Mehdi Taremi.

The Porto striker found the net with a stunning bicycle kick attempt in the decider of the Champions League quarter-finals against Chelsea back in April.

Over 600,000 fans took part in UEFA’s survey to vote for the best goal of the season and the majority picked the strike from the Iran international.

As UEFA highlighted, “only goals registered in UEFA club or international competitions between October 2020 and July 2021 were eligible for consideration” and a te-goal shortlist had been released ten days ago.

It also included Patrik Schick’s goal against Scotland at EURO 2020 and, of course, Lorenzo Insigne’s curler against Belgium in the quarter-finals of the competition. Insigne’s goal was the only one from an Italy or Serie A player included in the shortlist.

His goal was picked as the second-best one scored in Europen competitions last term.

Insigne will soon return from holiday to begin his pre-season with the Partenopei.

However, his contract expires in June 2022 and he still needs to reach an agreement with his club to extend his stay at the Stadio Maradona.
