Lorenzo Insigne opened up about the tragic news that his wife Genny suffered a miscarriage and commented on the initial difficulty of adapting to life with Toronto FC.

The former Napoli took a step back from football last month and withdrew from the Toronto FC squad due to a family matter, later revealed to be his wife’s tragic miscarriage whilst six months pregnant.

Speaking in a press conference, Insigne emotionally opened up about the loss of his unborn child.

“It’s well known that I have had to deal with personal problems in the last few weeks, but perhaps not everyone knows the reasons. So let me make it clear, my wife and I have lost a daughter, who will remain in our hearts forever.

“But we had a big family problem. I find it hard to explain why I don’t feel like it. But we had a big loss together with my wife and it was not easy. We are trying to move forward together as we always have.

“We have two other beautiful children, they allow us to be carefree, but our thoughts are always with us. It’s always in our thoughts what happened to us.”

The 31-year-old Italian forward also touched on the initial issues he faced after joining the Canadian club.

“When I arrived I knew it would be a difficult transition, but next year we will start together and we will be united. We will stay united, it will be a great season… and we know we will win a lot next year.”

Insigne and his wife Genny married in 2012 and have two sons together, Carmine and Christian, born in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

The Italian forward ended a career-long association with Napoli in the summer after his contract expired. He decided to head to the MLS to join Toronto FC, where he’s scored six goals and provided two assists in 12 appearances.

  1. Wish him well. Always struck me as a good bloke. Hope he is able to concentrate on football soon.
