Insigne: ‘Napoli wanted to honour Maradona’

Lorenzo Insigne admits this was a very special night for Napoli after crushing Maurizio Sarri’s Lazio 4-0 and honouring Diego Armando Maradona.

The Partenopei put in a magnificent performance, tearing Lazio apart with Piotr Zielinski, Fabian Ruiz and a pair of Dries Mertens goals.

“I really enjoyed myself and the objective is to enjoy your football as well as get the victory,” Insigne told DAZN.

“We had a great journey with Sarri, even if we weren’t able to win. Luciano Spalletti has started a new era and we are closing the gap from the rest of the teams.

“We made too many mistakes against Inter and yet still could’ve got a draw, so tonight we came out here confident in our capabilities.”

There was a spectacular atmosphere in the arena this evening, as before kick-off the lights were dimmed and a life-size statue of Maradona was unveiled, a year on from his death at the age of 60.

“I asked to turn the television on and watch it all, but they told me to stay focused in the locker room instead, so I’ll watch it later,” continued Insigne.

“We wanted to remember Diego with a great performance, it really meant a lot to us that we honour him tonight.”

Victor Osimhen is out for three months with multiple facial fractures, leading some to suggest it would end Napoli’s title push, but Mertens stepped into the breach once again.

“I’ve known Mertens for so many years, it’s no coincidence he’s Napoli’s all-time top scorer and we’ve nothing to worry about with him.”

Inevitably, Insigne was asked about the on-going negotiations for his contract extension, as the current deal expires in June 2022.

“I am trying not to think about it, because I have to stay concentrated on my football. My agent is talking to the club.

“It’s not only up to me, everyone needs to reach an agreement. I’ve got used to the fact I will be asked about this every time I talk to the media, so I’m fine with it.”
