Lorenzo Insigne reflected on some of his regrets from his time with Napoli and suggested that his departure from the club ‘wasn’t just up to him’.

The 31-year-old Italian forward ended a career-long association with his hometown side earlier this year, leaving on a free transfer to Toronto FC after his contract expired. During his 12-year spell in the first team, Insigne scored 122 goals and provided 95 assists in 434 appearances, helping the side win two Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana title.

Speaking to DAZN, Insigne first discussed some of the things he regrets from his time with Napoli.

“The regret I have is that we didn’t win in Naples. We had the chance with both Sarri and Spalletti to win the Scudetto and we didn’t manage it. We were this close, especially with Sarri….

“I hope that one day Napoli, even if I’m no longer here, can match this achievement because the fans deserve it, the city gives so much to the team and doesn’t receive this affection. Hopefully one day they can celebrate because they deserve it.”

He looked back at his departure from the club, the difficulty of following them now that he’s playing elsewhere and if he’s re-watched his farewell.

“No, otherwise I feel like crying! It hurts to watch their games and not be on the pitch, but that’s life. I have no regrets, I gave everything. I hope the fans can always be proud of me.

“The last game against Genoa I felt so much affection from the fans, it’s a pity I felt it the last game, the days I left. It hurts, I had a great time in Naples and I can’t hide the fact that I miss playing there.

“I made my choice, I’m their first fan, even if some fans are disappointed because they say I could have renewed if I love Naples so much.”

Finally, Insigne touched on why he didn’t end up signing a contract renewal with Napoli.

“It wasn’t just up to me. Naples is my home, if I leave here it’ll be to return to Naples. I don’t hide the fact that I miss Naples, but I’m fine here.”

Things have started well for Insigne in the MLS; the 31-year-old has scored six goals and provided two assists in his first nine games for the club.
