According to recent reports, Lorenzo Insigne has been in contact with Lazio coach Maurizio Sarri, as the former Napoli forward goes in search of a return to Serie A after a near-two-year spell in MLS with Toronto FC.

Insigne is currently back in Italy. On Wednesday, as reported by Il Corriere dello Sport, he visited his former boss and newly-appointed Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri at the team’s training ground in Castel Volturno.

However, Insigne’s visit to Naples was just to say hello. It is Lazio who are more likely to offer the 32-year-old a return to Serie A according to Thursday’s report.

The overriding message of Insigne’s conversations with Sarri is that he is available if required.

Il Corriere claims Sarri is aware that Insigne could present an enticing opportunity in the transfer market.

Lazio currently have plenty to focus on, especially in Serie A, where they currently sit in a disappointing 10th place, and in the Champions League, where they still need to qualify for the Round of 16.

If they were to progress to the knockout stages of the Champions League, Il Corriere reports that the club would have roughly an extra €10m to play with in the transfer market.

Insigne would still need to find a way out of Toronto, as he has a contract which expires in 2026. The club could be open to an early exit, either on loan or by termination of contract, due to his €11.5m salary.

  1. He makes way to much money at TFC. the president will not let him walk away for free and Lazio will never pay his outrageous salary. Sadly he is stuck on the worst team in the league until 2026.
