Lorenzo Insigne is reportedly closer than ever to signing a new contract with Napoli, staving off the threat of a free transfer next summer.

The captain’s current deal only runs to June 2022 and so far negotiations for an extension have hit a brick wall.

There was some progress last week, when Insigne’s agent met with President Aurelio De Laurentiis after months of stasis.

According to Calciomercato.com, it is the President who made the move that could resolve the issue once and for all.

His current salary is €4.5m and the initial plan from Napoli was to reduce his wages by over €1m.

It’s reported De Laurentiis is prepared to get close to the current salary package with €4m per season plus bonuses and another meeting is planned by the end of this month.

Napoli are top of the Serie A table with a 100 per cent record after seven rounds, the only side still in Europe’s top five leagues to have a perfect start to the season.
