Lorenzo Insigne believes Barcelona ‘didn’t do any better than us other than finishing their chances when we didn’t after Napoli lost 3-1 to exit the Champions League Round of 16.

The captain recovered from injury to start and converted a penalty, but it wasn’t enough after a 3-1 defeat at Camp Nou, eliminated 4-2 on aggregate.

“It’s disappointing to be eliminated. We tried and knew it was a very difficult game against a great team. We could’ve done a little more in the first half, overall it was a good performance and we’re disappointed to go out,” the captain told Sky Sport Italia.

“Barca have a lot of very creative players. We tried to play as a team, as we have done during the season, but we didn’t manage it 100 per cent.

“I am sure we can keep growing with the coach. We had difficulties in the first leg, then ahead of this second match Barcelona were able to rest for over a week to prepare, whereas we played non-stop.

“I hope we can do better next season. I think we’re on the right track, but we need to score more goals, and I include myself in that. We do the same in Serie A, we create so many scoring opportunities and don’t finish anywhere near enough of them.

“It’s a recurring problem and we need to sort it out. There was probably a foul for the first goal and Leo Messi was smart on Koulibaly for the penalty, but once we went 3-0 down, it could’ve gone worse.”

The statistics show that Napoli had more possession, twice as many shots, hit the woodwork twice and completed more or less as many passes.

“I really don’t think Barcelona did any better than us other than finishing their chances when we didn’t. Now we want to recharge the batteries and get going for next season, starting from scratch with this coach, because we’ve got real potential.”
