The Atalanta injury crisis is intensifying, as Merih Demiral and Rafael Toloi are out of action, but Joakim Maehle returns to face Sampdoria.

It kicks off on Wednesday at 17.30 UK time (16.30 GMT).

La Dea are still dealing with a huge problem due to injuries, particularly in defence, where Gian Piero Gasperini is down to the bare bones of his squad.

Berat Djimsiti is out for at least another couple of weeks after breaking his arm on international duty with Albania.

It was hoped Toloi and Demiral would be back from muscular issues, but neither of them have made the trip to Genoa for tomorrow’s Serie A midweek round.

Robin Gosens, Matteo Pessina and Hans Hateboer are also long-term absentees.

Jose Luis Palomino is the only first-choice centre-back in the squad, so we could again see Marten de Roon moved into defence, perhaps with teenager Gianluca Scavini or Matteo Lovato thrown in.

Another option would be switching to a four-man defence.

Maehle missed the draw with Udinese on Sunday due to a stomach bug, but he is back in the side.

Atalanta squad for Sampdoria: Musso, Rossi, Sportiello; Zappacosta, Lovato, Maehle, Palomino, Pezzella, Scalvini; De Roon, Freuler, Pasalic, Koopmeiners, Malinovskyi, Miranchuk; Ilicic, Muriel, Piccoli, Zapata
