Ciro Immobile assures Lazio will go to Inter next week ‘aiming to win’ and fight to the end of the season for a top four finish.
The 1-0 result against Cagliari was the sixth consecutive Serie A victory, allowing the Aquile to catch Roma in fourth place.
“We’ve made up some of the ground we lost earlier in the season, as we were lagging behind compared to the other clubs, but we’re now back on track and the wins over Roma and Atalanta were particularly important,” Immobile told Sky Sport Italia.
Their next match is against Inter, who are currently in second place and will be distracted by a midweek Coppa Italia semi-final against Juventus.
“It’s a very important game, they are doing well and we know the difficulties of this fixture, but we have a week to prepare and will go to Milan aiming to win.”
Since the start of 2021, Lazio picked up 19 points, fewer only than Manchester City and Monaco in Europe’s top five leagues.
“Our objective is to finish in the top four and we need to be more consistent, because the teams up there are not slowing down.
“When we faced Juventus, they were still at an experimental stage, but they’re playing better now. I think the trip to Milan was one of our best performances, yet we lost 3-2 and weren’t rewarded for that.
“Football is about moments and evidently that wasn’t our moment to win. I think it’s going to be a battle to the end of the season for the top four spots and we want to be up there.”
Immobile was asked why his scoring record for Italy is so very different to his performances at club level.
“Roberto Mancini knows me well and it is special for me every time I pull the Azzurri jersey on. Obviously, when you don’t spend so much time with your teammates, it’s tougher to get the same understanding on the pitch.
“I realise that I need to score more goals for Italy, but also that I can’t expect the Nazionale to change the way they play just to suit my characteristics. I hope that I’ve been storing international goals up for the Euros.”
