Immobile injury scare for Lazio and Italy

Lazio and Italy are concerned after Ciro Immobile hobbled off during the Coppa Italia quarter-final with Milan due to an ankle injury.

The centre-forward saw his shot charged down by Pierre Kalulu and in the process kicked his ankle against the defender’s shinpad.

It seemed very serious at first, as he had to be carried off by two members of the Lazio medical staff and could barely put his right foot on the ground.

Immobile came back on after treatment, but only lasted a couple of minutes before asking to be substituted.

With the Aquile trailing 3-0, there was no need to risk further damage

It was a worrying sight both for Lazio boss Maurizio Sarri, but also Italy coach Roberto Mancini, who was in the stands at San Siro to watch the game.

Italy have an upcoming World Cup play-off against North Macedonia next month, then either Portugal or Turkey, and Immobile is expected to be the first choice to start upfront.

After loaning Vedat Muriqi to Real Mallorca in the January transfer window, Sarri also effectively does not have any other senior centre-forwards to replace Immobile.
