Ante Rebic’s goal in Empoli–Milan last night is causing controversy as Sandro Tonali took a throw-in 10.64 metres from where the ball had gone out of play.
The Rossoneri secured a crucial 3-1 win on Tuscan soil despite many injuries to key players, including Mike Maignan and Theo Hernandez. Ante Rebic returned to action and broke the deadlock in the second half, but his goal is causing controversy in Italy as Tonali took the throw-in that led to the Croat’s goal 10.64 metres from where the ball had gone out.
Milan boss Stefano Pioli gave the ball to the Italy midfielder, who quickly took the throw-in, finding Leao beyond every Empoli defender. Clearly, the Portuguese striker could not be flagged offside (VIDEO).
Empoli coach Paolo Zanetti and Pioli argued on the touchline following Rebic’s goal which is also causing controversy on social media, while VAR could not intervene.
“I didn’t really look at the position, usually, it’s the referee who stops play if you’ve got it really wrong. The goal came from this… sneaky throw-in. It was the right thing to do at the time,” Tonali told DAZN last night.
