The 19-year-old will spend 2014-15 at Marassi after he broke into the capital side last season under Rudi Garcia.

“I think Sampdoria were the best choice which I could make,” he said at his unveiling on Thursday morning.

“I want to grow as a man and as a footballer. I’m aiming to play in as many games as possible and to do my best for this side.”

Romagnoli was fielded as a full-back at times by the French tactician last term, but the teenager insists he would be better used somewhere else.

“I’m a central defender really, even if I can then adapt to other positions,” he added. “I prefer to play on the left side.

“I like to play the ball out, but it is clear that a defender has to primarily know how to defend…”
