Jose Mourinho has long been an admirer of Icardi and the Argentina international is frustrated by his role at Paris Saint-Germain.
There had already been reports the former Inter forward wanted a return to Serie A and was linked with Juventus.
However, now La Repubblica suggests Icardi’s wife and agent Wanda Nara is in negotiations with Roma instead.
It would inevitably have to be a loan deal, especially as Inter had it written into the transfer contract that PSG would pay a heavy financial penalty if they sold him back to another Italian club.
Should Icardi make the move to Roma, that would then open the door for Dzeko to join Juve, a move that had already been close last summer.
The report in the Italian newspaper believes PSG would accept an Icardi two-year loan with obligation to buy for circa €30-35m.
