Mauro Icardi admits he didn’t expect to become Inter captain and took a sideswipe at “ignorant” Maxi Lopez.
The striker was a surprise pick to take the armband after Andrea Ranocchia was relegated to the bench.
“In all honesty, when I arrived at Inter I didn’t expect to become the captain. I just wanted to score goals and do great things,” Icardi told Inter Channel.

“In all honesty, when I arrived at Inter I didn’t expect to become the captain. I just wanted to score goals and do great things,” Icardi told Inter Channel.
“These are choices made for the present and arrive from one moment to the next, but were not planned ahead. There was already talk of it in the papers pre-season, then when the campaign started I found myself with the armband on.
“The first time I wore it against Atalanta, I was unlucky enough to get injured straight away. The second time against Milan I had an armband dedicated to Javier Zanetti for all his years playing here. I had it made especially for him.
“Maybe for the really important games I will have personalised armbands.”
Icardi is perhaps not the ideal role model, as he famously had an affair with his friend and teammate’s wife.
He later married Wanda Nara once her divorce from Maxi Lopez had been finalised and now they have a daughter of their own.
“I do what I want and don’t care about the others,” replied Icardi when asked if he had broken the code of teammates.
“My priorities are different to the comments of ignorant people who don’t know me.”
