Despite his goal drought in recent weeks, Zanetti has defended Icardi and backed Martinez to become a key figure for the club moving forward.

"We're fortunate to have Lautaro," he told Goal Italy. "He's a big surprise for me as I didn't know him personally, but I saw him play and I liked him a lot.

"He's doing well and will have a great future.

"Icardi is a well known goalscorer, we are lucky to have him at Inter and I think he and Lautaro represent the future."

Meanwhile, Zanetti also discussed Inter's targets this season, as they continue to sit just ahead of the chasing pack in the race for Champions League qualification.

"Our goal was to qualify for the Champions League," he added. "That was a starting point and now we have to improve. The team is growing, it has an identity and aspires to improve not only on the pitch."
