Roberto Mancini’s men look certain to miss out on European football this term, and currently languish in eighth place in Serie A.

“For me, Inter are one of the biggest teams in the world,” Icardi told Canal Plus.

“They have always been one of the historic names in football, and I had no doubts in my mind about moving to Milan.

“I always play here, and I help the team by scoring a lot of goals, but despite this we are not where Inter deserve to be as a team.

“We’re re-stabilising after the departure of a lot of champions who won everything here, so we’re just waiting until next year to be back on top again.”

Icardi clashed with fans earlier in the season following a defeat to Sassuolo, and gave an explanation.

“We lost 3-1 against Sassuolo and everyone lost their heads. My anger stemmed from the fact I gave my shirt to a kid in the front row who was among a lot of adults.

“What made me angry is that they ripped it from the hands of that child so they could throw the shirt back onto the pitch, but it’s over now.”
