Zlatan Ibrahimovic has only played the World Cup twice, failing to find the net in five appearances.

The Swede will end his career without playing the most important competition in football at his peak. Ibra played at the World Cup only twice in his career, in 2002 and 2006.

Back in 2002, his national team eliminated Argentina from the group stage but were knocked out by Senegal in the Round of 16. Ibra was only 20 at that time and was under contract with Ajax. The striker collected two appearances during the competition.

Four years later, he had already spent two seasons in Serie A and was about to join Inter from Juventus following the Calciopoli scandal. He played three games at the World Cup in Germany, won by Italy, but he once again failed to find the net in matches against Trinidad and Tobago, Paraguay and Germany.

He had retired from international football in 2018 when his national team qualified for Russia 2018, beating Italy in the play-offs.

Sweden won’t play at Qatar 2022 at the end of the year after suffering a 2-0 loss against Poland earlier this week. The 40-year-old will retire without having the chance to take centre stage at the World Cup but will still be remembered as one of the best strikers in the history of the game.
