Olivier Giroud is taking a starring role for France with two goals at the World Cup and an all-time record, but one man who saw it coming was his Milan teammate Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Before news that Karim Benzema was injured and that Giroud would be promoted to first choice centre-forward in Qatar, Ibra had his friend’s back.

Interviewed by 4-3-3 at the Globe Soccer Awards in Dubai on November 17, the Swede named Giroud as his choice for top scorer, biggest surprise and best player at the 2022 World Cup.

“He is still young. If I say he is young, it means I am young also,” grinned the 41-year-old.

Giroud has just become the oldest player ever to score for France at a World Cup, aged 37.
