Zlatan Ibrahimovic has come off injured during the first half of Milan’s Serie A clash against Juventus.

The 40-year-old Swede was taken off in the 28th minute and replaced with Olivier Giroud after suffering an injury to his Achilles tendon; he was later seen on the bench with an ice pack pressed to it. The player is often pointed to as a leader in the dressing room and his early departure will be a loss for the Rossoneri squad.

Ibrahimovic has made 19 appearances this season under coach Stefano Pioli, for a total of 1068 minutes. In that time, he has scored eight goals, and has been a key reference point for the younger players of the squad. His current contract expires with the club at the end of this season but a one-year renewal is expected to be signed.

The Swedish veteran suffered from an Achilles tendon problem back in September, which forced him to miss four league games and two Champions League matches.

A win for Milan against Juventus tonight is key if they want to keep up the pressure on league leaders Inter, who beat Venezia 2-1 yesterday thanks to a last minute goal from Edin Dzeko.
