Ibrahimovic: ‘My ego has disappeared, I have nothing to prove’

Zlatan Ibrahimovic opened up about his plans after hanging up his boots at Milan and what brings him happiness now.

The 41-year-old Swedish striker decided to retire at the end of last season, receiving an emotional farewell from the Rossoneri fans at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza during the final game of the season against Hellas Verona.

Ibrahimovic played a crucial role in turning things around for Milan following his arrival on a free transfer in January 2020, scoring eight goals in 23 league games during the club’s Scudetto winning season of 2021-22.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera via Calciomercato.com, Ibrahimovic first discussed where he sees himself in 10 years’ time.

“I’m taking one step at a time. The day at the Laureus campus is a great example of what I love to do right now. I wasn’t there to take, but to give something, to inspire.

“All these places, which I once called home, have given me something. Italy has a special place in my heart and Milan is where I live today, time will tell the rest.

“At the beginning of my career, I was a time bomb, both on and off the pitch. At this stage of my life my ego has disappeared, I have nothing to prove.”

He was then asked what brings him happiness after his retirement.

“Motivating others to practice physical activity, in any form, is something that makes me happy.”

Finally, Ibrahimovic was asked if he dreamed of coaching one day, possibly at Milan.

“You never know.”

Across his two spells with Milan, Ibrahimovic scored 93 goals and provided 35 assists in 163 appearances across all competitions.
