Zlatan Ibrahimovic met with Milan owner Gerry Cardinale recently to start laying the groundwork for a possible return to the club.

Daniele Longo of Calciomercato.com details how the 41-year-old Swede, who hung up his boots at the end of last season, met with the Rossoneri owner at Milanello last week. Cardinale reiterated his desire for Ibrahimovic to return to the club, keen to have his presence in the environment.

Cardinale knows that Milan need a figure who knows Milanello well and how the dynamics of the dressing room work, something that has been missing since Paolo Maldini’s exit in the summer.

The most likely option for now seems to be that Ibrahimovic will return to work closely with Stefano Pioli, possibly as a team manager, but the Swede doesn’t want to rush into a decision.

The former striker is keen to understand the new structure and system will allow him to help with the squad, as well as the margins of his possible role.

The two parties are expected to meet again between November and December to further discuss Ibrahimovic’s possible return to Milan.
