The Swede's future remains uncertain as his contract with the French club expires this summer and he seems unlikely to renew.

Ibrahimovic has been linked to a variety of teams, including Milan and some Chinese clubs, but according to Swedish journalist Jennifer Wegerup, who has often dealt with the player personally, he could land at Napoli.

“He absolutely will not return to Milan,” she told Radio CRC. “If he returns to Italy, then he may like Napoli as a destination.

“It would be a new challenge in a fascinating southern city. He always told me so.

“He likes the city and the fans, and he's fascinated by the idea of following in the footsteps of [Diego] Maradona.

“I'd rule out the Chinese offers, and those from Major League Soccer too.

“He's never been better in terms of condition. He's mature as a man and he still feels at a great level.

“He's the first to come to training and the last to leave, that's why he's looking for a new challenge to stimulate him.”

The rumour reached the ears of Napoli striker Insigne, who commented on it from the Azzurri camp.

“Who wouldn't love to play with Ibrahimovic?" said the 24-year-old. "He's fabulous, a great striker.

“But we have Gonzalo [Higuain] and we mean to keep him.”
