Milan announce that Zlatan Ibrahimovic had keyhole surgery on his knee and is expected to make a full recovery within eight weeks.

The injury had forced the 39-year-old to miss Euro 2020 with Sweden and there were fears more intensive surgical intervention would be required, meaning he’d also be ruled out of the first few weeks of the 2021-22 season.

“AC Milan announces that today Zlatan Ibrahimović underwent an arthroscopic lavage to his left knee at the UPMC Salvator Mundi International Hospital in Rome,” read the official club statement.

“The procedure carried out by surgeons Volker Musahl and Fabrizio Margheritini, and overseen by AC Milan medical chief Doctor Stefano Mazzoni and the Club’s orthopaedic consultant Roberto Pozzoni, was a success.

“Zlatan is doing well and will start his rehabilitation immediately.”

According to Sky Sport Italia, the rehabilitation process will require four weeks before he can resume running.

Ibrahimovic is expected to be available to play again after eight weeks.

Zlatan will turn 40 in October and just signed a new contract with Milan that will run to June 2022.

He made 27 competitive appearances for the Rossoneri this season, scoring 17 goals and providing three assists.
