The Viola had taken the lead at San Siro within three minutes, were 3-2 up at the 86th minute and wasted a golden opportunity with Dusan Vlahovic, set on a silver platter for him by Franck Ribery.
It proved a costly error, as Romelu Lukaku and Danilo D’Ambrosio turned it around in the final moments of the match.
“We came here to play our game with the right character and mentality. We always tried to score goals, had the chances to get more even in the first half and didn’t take them,” Iachini told DAZN.
“If you make mistakes, Inter will punish you. We didn’t give up, turned it around again to lead 3-2, had the opportunities to make it 4-2 and then were penalised for some naïve errors. With great regret, we lost the game, and even a point frankly would’ve felt unfair considering the number of chances we created.”
When Ribery and Giacomo Bonaventura came off, the game changed and Fiorentina weren’t quite as in control.
“Jack Bonaventura arrived without any pre-season training, so the fact we are able to start him is already remarkable, but we cannot risk an injury.
“Federico Chiesa asked to come off, as he had a slight bicep issue. Franck had worked so hard, he was really tired and I thought it only right to introduce some fresh legs.”
Kouame had opened the scoring after just three minutes on a Bonaventura assist.
“We have a lot of very young forwards, so the lack of experience is something we have to accept can happen. I started Kouame for the first two games because he seemed to be in better shape than the others in training, he’s just come back from a very serious knee injury, so we’re trying to get him regular playing time.
“We need to get everyone up to optimal condition, then we’ll evaluate game by game who should start. We’re working, as they are all still a little green and don’t always make the right final choice, but that’s part of the process.”
Vlahovic’s howler was probably decisive, as he fired off target when sent clear by Ribery.
“It’s a pity, I think after the error he too practically left the game psychologically, he kept going back over it in his mind and that’s not helpful. He must learn to always remain focused and be ready for the next chance.”
