Hughes: ‘Shaqiri not joining Stoke’

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes admits Inter winger Xherdan Shaqiri is unlikely to arrive ‘it's probably one that has gone away from us’.

The Nerazzurri are keen to move the Swiss international on, despite only arriving from Bayern Munich in January, and the English Premier League side had a bid accepted.

The Nerazzurri are keen to move the Swiss international on, despite only arriving from Bayern Munich in January, and the English Premier League side had a bid accepted.

However, in an interview with the Stoke Sentinel, the Potters’ manager admits the transfer is unlikely to happen.

“We had conversations and I went out to meet the boy,” Hughes said from Stoke’s pre-season tour of Singapore.

“We obviously had a bid accepted for a significant amount of money but that was always with the proviso that the player felt his future lay with us.

“We were able to have good conversations but in the end it wasn't to be. We felt that we needed to give a timescale.

“You need to be patient but there were other things we needed to move on to and it was important we were able to establish that enthusiasm to sense from the player and his people.

“We got to a point where didn't sense that.

“Is the deal dead? As far as I'm aware. We may revisit it but if I'm honest it's probably one that has gone away from us.”
