The Supercoppa played in Saudi Arabia, allows Serie A clubs to share €23m, but €8m is for the winner only.

A newly formatted Supercoppa Italiana is taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where, for the first time ever, there are four sides involved in the competition, with Serie A and Coppa Italia runners-up joining the title holders.

Defending Scudetto winners beat last season’s Coppa Italia finalists Fiorentina on Thursday, but there were only 7,000 fans in the stands at the Al-Awwal Park where the second semi-final and the Final will also be played.

Lega Calcio’s decision to play the competition in Saudi Arabia is mainly due to financial reasons as many ordinary fans and ultras have not followed their teams abroad.

La Repubblica reports the prize money for Serie A clubs is €23m. The winner will clearly get the biggest slice of the cake, earning €8m from this season’s Supercoppa. Runners-up will get €5m, while the third and fourth-placed will earn €1.6m each.

The other 16 Serie A sides not participating in the competition will share the remaining sum.
