Reports suggest that it will take around 15 points to automatically qualify for the Champions League knockout rounds in 2024-25, following the introduction of the competition’s new league phase.

Instead of being divided into eight groups of four, every team in the Champions League will now be measured against every other club in the competition, rather than just the ones in their group.

Teams who finish the league phase ranked from first down to eighth place will automatically qualify for the round of 16. The 16 teams who finish between ninth and 24th will contest in a play-off round, where half will be eliminated and half will go on to the knock-outs.

How many points required for Champions League knockouts?

Football Meets Data, who have run over 10,000 ELO-based  simulations, suggest that it will take at least 15 points to finish in the top eight. That would require five wins from eight matches, or another combination of wins and draws.

The same report also finds that it will likely take nine points from eight matches to qualify in the top 24, which will be enough to contest for a place in the round of 16.
