Luciano Spalletti is forced to change the planned line-ups against Malta and England after Sandro Tonali and Nicolò Zaniolo were released amid a betting scandal.

The Azzurri are preparing for two crucial EURO 2024 qualifiers, hosting Malta at the Stadio San Nicola on Saturday evening and visiting England at Wembley Stadium on Tuesday.

They were already missing injured players like Ciro Immobile, Mateo Retegui, Lorenzo Pellegrini and Ivan Provedel, but Zaniolo and Tonali have been released back to their clubs after police interrogated them at the Coverciano training camp over allegations of illegal betting.

Newcastle United midfielder Tonali had been expected to start at least the Malta match and probably against England too, so this forces a reshuffle.

According to the latest reports, Davide Frattesi and Nicolò Barella of Inter will be joined by Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante.

Another alternative would be Juventus player Manuel Locatelli.

Moise Kean was again tested out on the left side of the trident attack with Giacomo Raspadori and Domenico Berardi today.

Mattia Zaccagni has now joined the squad from Lazio after an ankle issue, but is not likely to be fit for the Malta match.

Malta will be without Teddy Teuma and Jodi Jones due to injury, while Steve Borg is suspended.

Italy (probable): Donnarumma; Di Lorenzo, Acerbi, Mancini, Dimarco; Frattesi, Cristante, Barella; Berardi, Raspadori, Kean
