Nicolo Barella is set to feature in the heart of the Inter midfield when the Nerazzurri visit Young Boys in the Champions League on Wednesday night, as regular holder Hakan Calhanoglu is set to miss this evening’s game through injury.

How Inter could line up in midfield without Calhanoglu

According to reports from multiple outlets including Sky and La Gazzetta dello Sport, Barella is likely to be the central-most midfielder in Inter’s three-man unit.

Kristjan Asllani is also out, so Barella will almost certainly be joined by Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Italy colleague Davide Frattesi.

Frattesi is likely to be the most advanced of the three midfielders, while Mkhitaryan could line-up in his regular position.

It is likely to be a heavily-rotated side, as Inter also have a massively important game coming up against third-placed Juventus in Serie A.

With that in mind, Simone Inzaghi could also test the likes of Alessandro Bastoni and Federico Dimarco, while Wednesday morning’s reports suggested that Marko Arnautovic and Mehdi Taremi will start up front in the places of Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez.
