Gerard Deulofeu was only a step away from joining Tottenham Hotspur in the recent January transfer window before a piece of poor fortune caused the deal to collapse.

The 28-year-old Spanish forward started the season in electric fashion with Udinese, scoring two goals and providing six assists in the first 15 matches of the season ahead of the World Cup break.

Deulofeu was finally starting to live up to his potential and had seemingly revitalised his career following his €17m move to Udine back in January 2021.

As reported by Daniele Longo of Calciomercato.com, Deulofeu was on the verge of signing for Tottenham in last month’s transfer window, with a deal agreed between the two clubs and the player keen on joining Antonio Conte’s squad.

As the agreement was being finalised, Deulofeu was forced to undergo a knee operation, sidelining him for at least three months. The surgery caused the deal with Spurs to collapse, leaving the player in Udine to work on his recovery.
