Hungarian club Honved have confirmed they are in negotiations with Alessandro Del Piero.
The former Juventus legend is a free agent after the end of his spell at Sydney FC and confessed he’s not prepared to hang up his boots yet.
Honved signed ex-Lazio and Inter striker Tommaso Rocchi this week, are coached by Pietro Vierchowod and want to add another Italian to their squad.
“It’s true, for the last 15-20 days we have been talking to Stefano, who is Alessandro’s brother and agent,” Honved director of sport Fabio Cordella told GianlucaDiMarzio.com.
“Our club is not economically up to the standard of these names, but the technical sponsor immediately accepted our idea and is ready to give us a big hand.
“We’ll see what happens. It would be wonderful to bring him to Budapest. Until an hour ago everyone thought it was a made-up story. Instead we really are trying for Del Piero.
“The Hungarian population deserves him, because real football has been missing here for a few years.
“The State is helping, as there are at least seven or eight new stadiums and soon we’ll start building our own too.”
Honved would give Del Piero the jersey number worn by legendary Ferenc Puskas.
“That shirt was retired many years ago, but President Hemingway would gladly bring it back for Del Piero and the Puskas family would also be honoured.
“We are trying for more Italians too. There is an interest for Fabiano Santacroce and I am on my way to Italy for other situations.”
