“I met with them, but I never really intended to go there,” Hoedt told Gazet van Antwerpen. “It was not financially feasible, but also because I’m very popular with the Antwerp fans.
“Anderlecht were interested as well. This pleased me, it shows that I left a very good impression in Belgium.
“But I admit it… Antwerp has stolen my heart a bit.”
Hoedt admitted coach Simone Inzaghi played an important part in his return to Rome.
“It was definitely an option to stay [at Antwerp]. I must honestly say that I was willing to give up something, because there was a great desire to stay.
“I felt great there. My girlfriend is from Zeeland and lived nearby. I spoke to Antwerp and Southampton to close the deal.
“But the difference turned out to be too great. But if a club arrives that has even more to offer in terms of sport, as a top athlete – and with the qualities I have – you just have to try.
