“After more than 45 years of coaching, I have decided that the time is right for me to step away from the rigours of top-flight Premier League football, so our final two games will be the last ones as manager of Crystal Palace,” he said at a press conference.

“I have had so much support from my wife and family throughout my career and I have been contemplating this decision for some time, and now I believe the time is right to consider them and to see what the future holds for me.”

Hodgson started his career as a coach in Sweden and has spells across Europe, with two stints at Inter between 1995 and 1997, before he returned from April to June in 1999.

He was in charge of 57 games at the Beneamata and later returned to Italy for a six-month spell at Udinese between July and December in 2001.
