Argentina international Gonzalo Higuain has explained why he opted to leave Real Madrid for Napoli this summer.

The player made it clear at the end of last season that he wanted a transfer and, after links with Juventus and Arsenal, he was netted by the Azzurri for €37m.

“I was very happy in Madrid during some moments, but less happy in others,” the 25-year-old told La Sexta.

“You suffer when you don’t get to play for some time, as you do when you have to share games with Karim Benzema.

“You played one game and then not the next…”

Higuain has been warmly welcomed by the Azzurri fans who are expecting him to replace Edinson Cavani after his  €64.5m move to Paris Saint-Germain.

“The fans show me their support on a daily basis here in Naples,” continued the striker. “But the Real fans also stood by me during all of my seven years in Blanco.”
