The 31-year-old forward had been increasingly snubbed by Argentina in recent months after poor form during his loan spell at Milan.

With new stars like Lautaro Martinez, Mauro Icardi and Paulo Dybala coming through, Pipita decided to call it a day.

“My era with the Seleccion is over, now I will be watching the team from the outside, which I’m sure will make many people happy,” Higuain sarcastically told Fox Sports Argentina.

“I spoke to (Coach Lionel) Scaloni and told him my point of view. This is my decision and I think it will do me good. I want to enjoy more time with my family and I see they suffer when I am so roundly criticised.

“I am happy with the decision I have made.”

Higuain terminates his international career with 31 goals in 75 caps.
