Bologna newcomer Aaron Hickey said it is “too early” for him to be compared to Liverpool full-back Andrew Robertson.

Hickey has been touted as similar to Premier League winner Robertson, but insisted the association is wide of the mark.

“I have been compared to him,” the former Heart of Midlothian defender said during his presentation press conference this morning. “Robertson is one of the best players I know but for now I believe it’s exaggerated to be compared to him.”

The Scottish defender also revealed why he chose Bologna despite the interest of many other clubs, citing the prospect of playing in Italy as crucial to his decision.

“I think I can really improve here,” he said. “Serie A is one of the best leagues in the world and being here means a lot to me. It is very important to play for Bologna. I can play with some top players.”

The 18-year-old started Monday’s derby dell’Emilia at the Stadio Dall’Ara, where Bologna trashed Parma 4-1, and Hickey spoke of what his new coach said to him before the match.

“Before entering the pitch Sinisa Mihajlovic told me that he trusts me. At the end of the game he congratulated everyone. I have no starting spot guaranteed, I work hard to get a place in the starting XI.”

Hickey added that he is enjoying his time at Bologna so far: “I feel at ease, there are many young players of different nationalities. They speak English very well and I can confront myself with everybody. I like to push forward but I will do whatever the coach wants.”

Asked why he chose the No. 3 shirt, he explained: “It is the typical number of a full-back, I preferred it to 51.”
