Lazio’s Brazilian playmaker Hernanes has reflected on his good form this season, revealing that his game has had to change. “I realised you must use cunning.”

The 26-year-old midfielder has enjoyed a more consistent spell of form for the Biancocelesti so far this season, having netted eight times and assisted twice from 25 League appearances.

His form has earned a recall to the Brazilian national team after an eight-month absence, which as the player reflected this week, is a result of his adaptation this season to Italian football.

“I’ve changed a lot since my arrival in Italy,” he told Globoesporte.com

“Here the defenders are constantly alert and use any means to stop you moving. So I had to work hard to adapt.

“And I changed the way I play because I was training in Brazil exclusively on the legs, I only concentrated on the ball.

“Here, however, I realised that you must use cunning, use your arms, push and pull shirts.”

Lazio currently occupy third spot in the table, which Hernanes believes is down to such results as the two derby wins over Roma and a January win over Milan.

“These are important games, which give leverage to a player’s career. The great thing is that things have worked well in these games and the team have grown stronger as a result.

“Last year I remember that in some of these games we played well but could not be decisive. This year, things have been different for me and the team. It’s been a very good period.

“We could be even higher in the standings, but there have been unexpected things – in January we sold a few players and many others were injured – all this has hurt the team and is regretful.”
