Scottish midfielder Liam Henderson is set to join Empoli from Lecce, on loan with option to buy that could become an obligation.

According to Sky Sport Italia, the two clubs have reached an agreement for a paid loan spell.

The option to buy can become mandatory if certain conditions are met, for example if Empoli remain in Serie A.

Henderson has been in Italy since January 2018, when leaving Celtic for Bari.

The 25-year-old midfielder has since moved on through Hellas Verona, had a loan at Empoli in 2020 and then joined Lecce last season.

He only has four Serie A appearances and is yet to earn a senior cap for Scotland.

Empoli were promoted as Serie B league title winners over the summer and are busy rebuilding the squad under new coach Aurelio Andreazzoli.

As reported yesterday, Sebastiano Luperto is also set to join Empoli on loan from Napoli with option to buy.
