There are reports in the Netherlands that Hans Hateboer requires surgery on his foot, which could transform Atalanta’s transfer strategy.

The 27-year-old right-wing-back is one of the first names on the teamsheet for coach Gian Piero Gasperini, last season contributing two goals and four assists in 30 competitive games.

He would’ve played more if not for an ankle injury and those problems have persisted this summer with pain in his foot.

According to Voetbal International in Holland, Hateboer has been told by specialists that he needs surgery, which will keep him out of action for two to three months.

If confirmed, then Atalanta will dive back onto the transfer market seeking a suitable replacement for that key role in the side.

Davide Zappacosta had been the first choice, but over the last 24 hours the Chelsea man seems to have agreed terms with Fiorentina instead.

The Viola can only pick him up after they’ve sold Pol Lirola to Olympique Marseille.

It’s now possible that Atalanta could dive back in with a new proposal for Zappacosta, who after all started his career in their youth academy in Bergamo.
