Famous for his tough tackling and relative lack of technical skill, he used to wear a New Zealand rugby shirt under his jersey, taking inspiration from the attitude of the All Blacks.

However, his reputation for being borderline violent is unfair, because in 468 competitive appearances for Milan, Gattuso only received 119 yellow cards and was sent off five times.
Of those five, only one was a straight red.
He even managed to score 11 goals and provide 20 assists, not a bad tally for someone who didn’t spend much time in the opposition penalty area.
