The Italian press highlighted Simone Inzaghi’s poor substitutions and called Samir Handanovic’s performance ‘an embarrassment’ in Inter’s 2-1 derby loss to Milan.

The Nerazzurri took the lead after 38 minutes thanks to Ivan Perisic, but two quick goals from Olivier Giroud in the 75th and 78th minutes secured the three points for Stefano Pioli’s side, who now sit only one point behind their intercity rivals in the league table.

Corriere dello Sport felt as if Inzaghi’s substations caused Inter to “no longer have control of the match”, and they also called Handanovic’s performance “an embarrassment”. Tuttosport noted that Handanovic’s made “a very serious mistake for the importance it could have” in the title race. The Turin paper also noted that Inzaghi’s work paid off in the first half but the team fell due to being “overwhelmed by events.”

Handanovic’s ratings in the Italian newspapers:

La Gazzetta dello Sport: 5

Tuttosport: 4.5

Corriere dello Sport: 5

  1. Handanovic ignored the alarm for retirement. A goalkeeper cannot continue at the optimum performance needed for a giant club like Inter. Buffon did the same mistake.

A younger goalkeeper is critical requirement for INTER.

  2. @Interisti
Fair enough, he hasn’t been good but that game last night was hardly all his fault. It’s paper talk I suppose!

  3. He did make a lot of great saves in the derby last year to help Inter win it but unfortunately he has become more and more prone to errors as he gets older.

  4. @DBmilan – Milan had 3 shots on target for the whole game. First goal he could do nothing. 2nd he should of saved – he made Giroud look like a superstar.

Maignan saved 5 much more difficult ones and that’s the diff in the game. Milan should of been down 3-0 half time if it wasn’t for him

  5. Handanovic was the victim of a ricochet and terrible defending. End of…. wait for Onana and you will miss Handanovic
