Former Inter captain Samir Handanovic is set to officially retire from professional football, but is also ready to return to San Siro in a new role behind the scenes according to reports on Wednesday morning.

The 39-year-old was let go by the Nerazzurri at the end of the 2022-23 campaign following the expiry of his previous contract. The Slovenian had reportedly been exploring playing options elsewhere, but has not received a suitable offer.

The Slovenian made a total of 455 appearances for the Nerazzurri across all competitions, including 380 in Serie A during his 11-year stay. During that time, he collected one Serie A winners medal as well as another two in the Coppa Italia.

However, this is unlikely to be the final farewell between Inter and Handanovic, as reports from Il Giornale claim that he is set to join Simone Inzaghi’s staff as a technical collaborator.

That role will involve close monitoring of Inter’s goalkeepers and potential targets, using his experience to provide help and advice for the current first team squad.
