The 37-year-old Slovenian shot stopper will start in this evening’s Serie A clash against Sampdoria, a must win game for the Nerazzurri if they want any hope of winning the Scudetto this season. Rivals Milan sit two points ahead and hold the head-to-head advantage, so Inter need Sassuolo to beat the Rossoneri this evening.
Speaking to Inter’s media outlets, Handanovic touched on his best memories with Inter across the last 10 years.
“On the podium of my best memories I would put my arrival in the Nerazzurri and certain special victories, like the one worth a Champions League spot against Empoli. It was a long and hard-fought game.”
He commented on the team’s recent success over the last year.
“In the last year we have lifted three trophies, all the result of great and long work. Each of these matches will remain special for me, from the victory in Crotone last season to the success in the Supercoppa Italiana, to the most recent one.”
Finally, Handanovic spoke about the recent emotions felt with Inter.
“This year we have experienced very strong emotions, after the Scudetto we raised two more trophies and we did it by always remaining united and giving everything on the pitch.
“If there’s one thing I envy about other roles? I’d like to once feel that wonderful sensation that strikers feel when they score goals.”
The 37-year-old Handanovic made 437 appearances across all competitions for Inter, helping the side win a Scudetto, a Coppa Italia and a Supercoppa Italiana. Ajax shot stopper André Onana is being brought in to replace the Slovenian, who could still be offered a short-term contract to stay on as a backup option.
