Samir Handanovic maintains Inter ‘pinned Real Madrid back’ in both games, but the difference was in how clinical their finishing proved to be.

The Nerazzurri needed a victory to take top spot from the Merengues, but were undone by two stunning long-range strikes by Toni Kroos and Marco Asensio.

Nicolò Barella also saw red for a reaction foul on Eder Militao.

“We had a good game overall, but we needed to be more determined, finish more of our chances. We knew that we had to run risks and that’s what allowed some of Real Madrid’s dangerous counter-attacks.

“The regret is that we got into their final third so many times and didn’t get enough shots on target from those situations.

“We pinned Real Madrid back in both games, home and away, but the difference is they are clinical when they have scoring opportunities and we are not.

“Both teams went for it, I think it was entertaining for the fans. This match confirms our status, but also shows we need something more in the final third.”
