Marek Hamsik admits Napoli “were never really able to recover” from their opening Champions League defeat to Shakhtar Donetsk.

The Partenopei crashed out of the tournament after a 2-1 defeat to Feyenoord this evening, while Shakhtar would’ve secured qualification regardless by beating Manchester City 2-1.

“We were not looking at what was happening in Ukraine, we were focused on this game. It hurts to lose at the 90th, but we should’ve done more to bring the result home,” Hamsik told Mediaset Premium.

“We lacked pace and needed more movement off the ball. The first defeat to Shakhtar complicated everything and we were never really able to recover. It’s a shame, but it’s behind us now.

“We are a team who must always think of winning and so we want to go as far as possible in the Europa League.”
